Breathe into Balance
Did you know that you can turn your breathing into a little ritual of calm and connection with yourself?
Alternate nostril breathing, known in yoga as Nadi Shodhana, is a technique that involves breathing alternately through each nostril. Traditionally, it is associated with energetic balance and harmony between body and mind.
Practising it mindfully can help you focus your mind, improve concentration and give yourself a few moments of peace and quiet.
How to practise it
Find a quiet place and sit comfortably, with your back straight and your shoulders relaxed.
- Gently close your right nostril and breathe in through your left nostril.
- Close your left nostril and breathe out through your right nostril.
- Breathe in through your right nostril and then close it to breathe out through your left nostril.
Continue alternating for one or two minutes, breathing gently, without forcing your breath or holding it.
A moment for yourself
Alternate nostril breathing invites us to pay attention to the present moment and cultivate a sense of balance and calm. It is also traditionally associated with harmony between the brain’s two hemispheres.
If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, stop the practice and breathe normally.
Breathe. Feel. Transform.
Sometimes, self-care begins with something as simple as pausing for a few minutes and reconnecting with ourselves.
